This expedition in Djibouti starts at Lake Abbé on the border with Ethiopia. Lake Abbé is a mysterious place. Six walking days and about 125 km later you arrive at Lake Assal, a Rift Valley salt lake of a stunning beauty. This is the deepest point in Africa. You will cross plains of sand and clay, hills, lava fields and canyons to reach this salt lake on which crust you will spend the night, an eerie landscape lit by the moon.
You will enjoy the breath-taking landscapes and the remoteness of the area and will live like the Afar nomads who guide us through their lands ... a truely wonderful explerience.

Assayita, the ancient Afar capital is the starting and ending point of this expedition in eastern Ethiopia. From here you march six days in a loop passing lakes, small rivers, marshes, lava fields and grass lands. You will see many birds, and crocodiles and hippo's live in the lakes and rivers.
This part of the Afar triangle is much greener than neighbouring Djibouti beacause of the lakes and the Awash river which ends in Lake Abbé. Not many westerners have ever been to this remote Sultanate of Aussa, Wilfred Thesiger being the first white man to leave this place alive in 1934.
